Indian Head Massage

Indian Head Massage has to be one of my favourite therapies, both to give and to receive. What’s not to love about having a wonderful neck and head massage- mmm so relaxing!

The lovely staff at the Association of Indian Head Massage (AIHM) have put together some frequently asked questions on Indian Head Massage.  I’ve quoted below some of the questions I’ve routinely been asked at TherapyBee.

“What are the benefits of Indian Head Massage?

Indian Head Massage is a simple and effective therapy that has become popular in today’s stressful society. After a treatment most people feel very relaxed, you may also find that muscle tension is eased, you sleep better, and have a feeling of improved mood and general wellbeing. You may find other improvements too, but this happens on a very individual basis. Oils are also used by some therapists to enhance benefits and help moisturise and nourish the skin and hair. The traditional massage oils used are: Sweet Almond, Coconut, Olive, Mustard, Sunflower and Sesame.

How long will a treatment last?

Most treatments will last for about 30-45 minutes, although the appointment will be longer than this so the therapist can find out about your medical health and general lifestyle.   If you would like to try Indian Head Massage some therapists also offer shorter ‘taster treatments’ of approximately 20 minutes – ask the therapist if this is possible if you would prefer to try a shorter treatment. There are other times when the therapist may suggest a shorter treatment e.g. in a palliative care setting. If you have any medically diagnosed conditions, do mention these to the therapist before you book.

Will I have to take my clothes off for an Indian Head Massage?

This is worth discussing with your therapist, some therapists will work with you fully clothed, and if this is the case it is recommended that you wear loose clothing such as a short-sleeved T-shirt. Some therapists however will ask you to remove your upper clothes and will provide a towel or a sarong for you to wrap yourself in in order to expose the area of the back, from the base of the shoulder blades to the neck. It is also worth discussing the use of oils with your therapist. You may choose to take an old top to put on afterwards so your clothes don’t get marked.

What will happen during the treatment?

Before the treatment the therapist will explain the treatment you are to receive and they should outline the moves and techniques they will be using. They will also discuss the areas of the body they will be working such as scalp, neck, face, shoulders etc. If there are any areas you would prefer not to be touched then let your therapist know so they can adapt the treatment to suit your requirements.

How will I feel after the treatment?

Most people feel incredibly relaxed with a general sense of well-being, some people may feel a little ‘spaced out’ and you may need a few minutes rest before driving. It is also common to feel a decrease in the tension around the neck, shoulders and scalp with a sense of muscles being warm and more flexible.”
