Reflexology is a non-intrusive ancient therapy which is based on the theory that the different organs and systems of the body can be mapped to different points or areas on the feet and hands. Working these points using precise techniques Reflexologists can encourage the body to relax whilst also have an energetic effect on the body to encourage wellbeing.
How will you benefit?
Reflexology therapists support you as a whole person and as you are unique, it is not possible to know in advance how you will react to a reflexology treatment. Most people feel very relaxed. You may sleep better and have a sunnier disposition with a general sense of wellbeing following a treatment.
What can you expect at a Reflexology treatment?
Reflexology is an easy treatment to receive and at most you will be asked to remove your shoes and socks.
At the first treatment, which is longer that subsequent treatments, a medical history will be taken and you will be talked through the treatment with notes being taken to assist the therapist compile an individual treatment plan.
The therapist will use their thumbs, fingers or knuckles to apply pressure to the feet, lower leg or the hands. Some areas may feel tender but this should pass. The general experience should be relaxing and clients have been known to fall asleep.
After the treatment the therapist will discuss the session, what they found and how you felt, and discuss appropriate aftercare advice and make recommendations on further treatments.
How will you feel after the treatment?
Most people feel an improved sense of wellbeing and experience a sense of deep relaxation sleeping deeply that night. Sometimes clients have experienced a mild headache, feeling tired and need to go to the toilet more often following their treatment. These reactions should pass within 24-48hrs and are a normal part of the healing process.
How many treatments should you have?
There is no magic formula for the number of treatments as each client has different needs. Some clients find a monthly session is enough to maintain wellbeing.
Often, if a specific outcome is sort, a course of 4 to 6 treatments may be best with longer intervals between treatments as wellbeing improves.
After your first or even second treatment, your therapist will discuss the best way forward. In some cases this may even be to refer you to another complementary therapy or therapist with specialist training.
